[ Story ]

Yukisada Isao's (Go) massive hit, romantic drama was second only to Miyazaki Hayao's animated blockbuster Howl's Moving Castle at the Japanese box office in 2004, and gave birth to the hugely popular trend of "pure love" stories.
Marriage-shy Sakutaro (Osawa Takao) is at a loss when his fiancee Ritsuko (Shibasaki Kou) suddenly runs away to her family home in Shikoku. He follows her there, but is revisited by memories of his childhood sweetheart. In his second year of high school, Sakutaro (Moriyama Mirai) fell in love with a girl named Aki (Nagasawa Masami) and the two gradually grew closer. They shared an audio diary, and even spent a night together on an uninhabited island. However, Aki developed an incurable disease, causing Sakutaro's devotion to her to grow even stronger. One day, he seized upon an off-hand comment by Aki and decided to take her to "the center of the world," but just when they were about to board their flight she collapsed and passed away. Still unable to move on from his memories of Aki, the adult Sakutaro decides to travel to "the center of the world" with Ritsuko.
