[ Story ]
A documentary portrait of Arai Tatsuya, a prodigiously talented craftsman who began carving Noh masks at the age of 6, and later became the youngest person ever to receive the Incentive Award of the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology at the tender age of 22. In addition to scenes of this young artisan in the quiet solitude of his studio, whittling down square blocks of wood and imbuing these masks with profound emotion using a bold yet sensitive technique, this film also shows the finished product being deployed on stage in a performance by Nakasyo Nobuo, a master Noh practitioner from the Kanze school. Doing away with all narration, interview footage and other verbal explanations, this film offers viewers a refreshingly unembellished look at the single-minded devotion of Arai's chosen craft.
