[ Story ]
Three corpses are discovered in an apartment on the twentieth floor of a high-rise residential building and another is found on the ground nearby having apparently plummeted to earth from the same level. According to the landlord's records, the apartment's occupants are a man named Koito Shinji and his family, but the bodies found do not belong to them. Unable to pay their debts, they had already abandoned the apartment unnoticed. The victims appear to be another family, the Sunakawas, who had been allowed to live in the apartment by Koito in order to prevent it being sold. Ishida, who successfully bid for the apartment at a public auction, has disappeared and so becomes a suspect. However, a woman turns up who claims to be Mrs. Sunakawa, and it is learned that the bodies actually belong to four complete strangers. As the mystery deepens, the testimony of numerous witnesses gradually helps to build a picture of what really happened.
Director Obayashi Nobuhiko (Sada) skillfully manipulates a human maze of over 100 characters in this documentary-style thriller faithfully adapted from the novel by Miyabe Miyuki.
