The first chapter in the animated series based on Ubukata Tow's cyberpunk novels, which won the Best Japanese SF Award. A girl is saved by a forbidden technological procedure, and as a side effect gains superpowers. Ubukata himself has written the script in three parts. A 15 year old prostitute, Balot (voice: Hayashibara Megumi) lives a miserable life in Mardock City. She is taken in by a casino owner, Shell (voice: Nakai Kazuya), and given a new identity. But Shell soon catches Balot searching for data on her past and detonates a car with her in it.
