Based on the traditional rakugo story of "Sokotsu Nagaya (Tenement of Careless People)," Moonlight Mask is Director Itao Itsuji's second film. The presence of a mystifying moon pervades the film, and the plot develops disquietingly alongside the flow of rakugo narratives.
It is 1947, after the end of World War II. A man (Itao) returns home from the battlefield. He is Usagi Morinoya, a talented and popular rakugo storyteller. He comes home with a bandage around his war-wounded face and with no memory of his past.
