An official selection of the 2012 Venice International Film Festival's Orizzonti section, this drama is a striking adaptation of Akutagawa Prize-winning author Nakagami Kenji's novella by uncompromising filmmaker Wakamatsu Koji. It stars Terajima Shinobu, who won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival for her performance in Caterpillar.
Oryu (Terajima), a midwife in the slums of Kishu, approaches the end of her life. Memories of the men she knew intimately surface in her mind, and she looks back upon the lives of those who she brought into the world.
