[ Story ]

Machi (Karen), a high school girl lives in a small village in the mountains. One day, she and her friends start a kind of storytelling game. They begin with the sentence "A pet shop in town bought a camel..." and spin fairy-tale yarns. Every adult living in this village also has a story; a "personal history", crafted from their own lives. Then one day, an ancient tree called the "Hidden Tree", which was buried during a volcanic eruption, resurfaces when the cliff of the local croquet field collapses during a heavy rain. As if summoned by the tree, the villagers gather beneath it and a festival atmosphere begins. They construct a papier-mache whale and float it into the air with balloons. Then the stories of the villagers become dream-like images, which disappear into the air like illusions.
Director Oguri Kohei came to attention with masterpieces such as Doro no Kawa (Muddy River), Shi no Toge (The Sting of Death) and Nemuru Otoko (Sleeping Man). This is his first film in 9 years. It was selected for the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes in 2005.
