[ Story ]
Towards the end of the Edo period (in the middle of the 19th century), the city of Edo is plagued with "Demons" who assume human form, devour people, and are bent on the destruction of the human world. A secret society of ruthless martial arts experts who are able to spot demons in human disguise is formed to defeat the demons. This society is called Onimikado (The Demon Police). One of the members, a brilliant swordsman named Wakuraba Izumo (Ichikawa Somegoro), formerly known as the "Slayer of Demons", has withdrawn from the organization and is now working as a stage actor. Then one day, he meets the beautiful Tsubaki (Miyazawa Rie) and falls instantly in love with her. However, Izumo does not realize that Tsubaki is actually a demon in disguise and that if she falls in love with a human being she will transform into Ashura, the queen of the demons. Izumo and Tsubaki fall madly in love and Ashura's ghostly castle rises into the skies above the city. As Edo is consumed in flames, Izumo and Tsubaki are destined to clash in mortal combat despite their love and they perish with the castle itself.
Directed by Takita Yojiro who helmed Onmyouji (The Ying Yang Master), and Mibugishiden (When the Last Sword is Drawn).
