An animated adaptation of a book by children's author Niimi Nankichi. Its attention to detail stretches from authentic recreations of Meiji period scenery and everyday items to even the body weights of its characters, and gives them believably human motion. Produced as part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' "PROJECT A" to help cultivate up-and-coming animators.
As Japan enters a new age of civilization and enlightenment, Tatsunosuke (voice: Kamiya Hiroshi) visits a town for the first time and discovers a lamp, which he takes back to his own village. Although the other villagers have an aversion to new things, they grow accustomed to it, and Tatsunosuke begins a new career as a lamp dealer. However...
