[ Story ]
It is the summer of 1990 in Kyoto. A 17-year-old Mizuho (Oho Sayoko) is rebellious against her mother (Fubuki Jun). Mizuho is hoping her father (Emoto Akira), who left home, will return some day. She is taking great care of a stickleback which her father gave her; a stickleback is a type of small fish, with 3 spines on its back for protection, and lives only in clean water.
One day at a Japanese-style pub where her mother works, Mizuho meets Charlie, an American who was injured during the Vietnam War and still carries an emotional scar. Mizuho, having been disappointed with her boyfriend, Sho, and her father, feels she can entrust everything to Charlie, who has the same sense of loneliness as Mizuho - then, she becomes pregnant.
Mizuho decides to have the baby and resigns from her high school. Having experienced child birth and child rearing, Mizuho feels very grateful to her mother for the first time. When the next spring comes around, Mizuho seems so much more grown up, just like young fishes hatched from eggs.
Directed by Nakamura Mayu, who is from Kyoto, Japan. Her short film, Calling (2004) won the Gold Award at the Houston International Film Festival Students' Section, and it was shown at various film festivals throughout the world. This is her theatrical feature film debut.
