Director Wakamatsu Setsuro, who won Best Film at the 33rd Japanese Academy Awards for The Unbroken, adapts Asada Jiro's short story about a samurai at the mercy of changing times. The splendid cast includes Nakai Kiichi, Abe Hiroshi, Hirosue Ryoko and Nakamura Kichiemon.
Shimura Kingo (Nakai) witnesses the assassination of his master Ii Naosuke (Nakamura), and is ordered to exact revenge. Thirteen years later, Kingo at last finds his sworn enemy Sabashi Jubei (Abe), but on that very same day the Meiji government bans retribution…
