[ Story ]
This is a story of the Kawachi district in the southwestern part of Osaka, where the people live an open but greed-filled existence which never changes in peace or war.
They call Oichi a "Kotsuma Nankin", meaning a small, round and firm pumpkin, tasty to eat. Her trials begin when she is violated one night by the village idiot whose father at first opposes their union but consents when he senses profit. Oichi makes herself the leader of a religious sect, using her power of sharp intuition. This fails, however, when the idiot's mother turns insane and burns down the sect's headquarters.
In Osaka, Oichi finds new adventures with various men. First, it is a stockbroker, then it is a boy from home who proves a cad. She ends up in a suicidal attempt with a Kobe shipbuilder who has offered her marriage, although unknown to her he already has a wife. Despite these tribulations, Oichi is a woman of Kawachi and that means one who is determined to make her way in the world no matter what the cost.
