[ Story ]

Sugako Okada, a restaurant waitress, and her daughter Sachiko meet for the first time in twenty years. But their long separation has made it difficult for them to understand each other and Sachiko leaves to work at a beauty parlor. When her mother falls ill, Sachiko rushes to her side, and Sugako recovers.
Mother and daughter engage in a bitter quarrel over a marriage proposal from a sixty-year-old widower. Another quarrel follows a visit by a young man named Sakata who is in love with Sachiko.
The next morning Sugako fails to awaken due to an overdose of sleeping pills, but she recovers and continues to be stubborn and quarrelsome.
Tiring of her hectic life with her mother, Sachiko decides to return to the country when Sugako falls ill again.
To raise money for the hospital bills, Sachiko gives herself to her mother's former lover. Sugako dies, and under her pillow is a savings deposit book with just enough money to take care of the hospital and funeral expenses.
