Yamada, a country youth, is drafted into the army. Compared to the poverty that he has known, the army is like a paradise where he is at least assured of three meals a day.
He becomes attached to Munemoto, an aspiring a novelist, the two become fast friends, and Yamada learns to read and write. Because he likes the army and does not want to be discharged from military service he starts to write a letter to the Emperor, asking that he be retained.
The war situation becomes aggravated and Yamada is sent to the front. After Japan's surrender he is assisted by Munemoto and his wife.
But as Yamada is about to attain happiness at last and his wedding day approaches, he is run over by a truck and killed.
