Lord Mitsuhide sends Hayato, a spy, into the backwoods of Ochinogo to see if there is gold in the territory as rumored. Hayato was born in this area but was thrown into a river and given up for dead when still a baby. He conceals this fact during his spying activities in the village where he learns that there is gold but that Kansuke the headman won't allow it to be taken away. Hayato also learns that Kansuke is his elder brother.
In the meantime, Mitsuhide is defeated in battle and three leading generals plan to desert and go over to the victor. They enter the village to take away the gold to give to their new lord, but Hayato learns of their plan and kills all three. Then he reveals to Kansuke that they are brothers.
