[ Story ]
To escape the fate of a concubine, Tae elopes with Ihei, a master sword-man. As hired killers give chase, the two lovers work their way about the country. Tae becomes a maid at an inn while Ihei works as a day-laborer. But his income is so meager that, in desperation, he finally assumes the role of a fencing school hustler to win sufficient gold to bribe his way through a clan check-point.
To stake one's martial skill for monetary gain is a disgrace to the samurai class. Only as a final resort would any member of the class lower himself to such level.
Ihei's skill, however, is noted by the local governor who promises him a post as Master of Martial Arts without questioning his past. Rejoicing soon turns to dejection when the offer is retracted on grounds that though other action may be forgiven, having sold his talents for money could not be condoned.
As the weary couple are about to continue their journey, they are attacked by their former Lord's hired killers. But they are aided by another ronin, Gunjuro Oba, who has suddenly turned against his former employers and decided to save them. He, too, suffered a similar tragedy... but his wife did not survive.
