Five youths, Kikuo (Tetsuo lshidate), Asao (Gin Maeda), Kiyoshi (Choichiro Kawarazaki), lchiro (Hideki Hayashi) and Ryuji (Ryunosuke Minegishi), all of poor local families, work at a small factory in Tokyo. But the factory goes into bankruptcy leaving the five jobless. They decide to unite in founding a joint forwarding agency, and to buy a truck with their savings.
The five youths start work at different jobs. Their savings gradually increase, but their goal, however, still seems far away. Ryuji is accidentally killed by the police, while engaging in a strike with other workers. Then, Kiyoshi, is arrested when he is involved in robbery, and lchiro leaves the group to marry a cabaret hostess.
Kikuo and Asao are now alone. They try hard and day comes at last when their long-cherished dream is fulfilled and they obtain a new dumptruck. Kiyoshi's mother (Michiko Araki) and Yukiko (Michie Terada), his sister, come to Tokyo to see Kiyoshi in jail. Asao and Kikuo are both attracted to Yukiko.
One day, Kiyoshi escapes from jail, kills a policeman, runs into their apartment and asks Yukio and Asao to take him by their truck to his hometown, where he swears he will make a new start.
Kiyoshi dies when they near his hometown. Crazy with sadness, Asao runs the truck over a cliff, but his life is saved. And although they have lost their truck, Kikuo and Asao now feel they can start a new lite.
