[ Story ]
At midnight, Yamabe (Tsutomu Yamazaki), a killer, escapes from prison. Two years before, bribed by a narcotic smuggler, Yamabe killed a real estate broker. As he was being arrested by detective Negoro (Go Wakabayashi}, the detective's bullet struck Sakuko (Yoshiko Kayama), Yamabe's girl friend who attempted to protect him, and crippled her. When Yamabe was sent to prison, Negoro cared for her and they fell in love. Sakuko asked him to marry her, but Negoro was reluctant to take the killer's sweetheart from him. Learning of the relationship of his girl friend and the detective, Yamabe had pledged revenge.
Yamabe obtains a rifle, then lures Sakuko out and locks her as a decoy in a room opposite Negoro's apartment. Yamabe explains that he had murdered the real estate broker because he wanted money to make her happy. But she insists that her feelings toward Negoro will not change and Yamabe decides to kill the detective and then die with her.
The light goes on in Negoro's room. Yamabe promptly shoots through the window at a shadow.
Police surround Yamabe's building, as he threatens to kill Sakuko and himself. Then, to his shock, Negoro shows up, weaponless, for it was Negoro's sister whom Yamabe had shot. Her life was saved by a pendant the
bullet hit.
Negoro confesses how sorry he is for Yamabe, but the jealous killer finally shoots Sakuko to death when she asserts her love for Negoro.
It is midnight again. The ambulance with Sakuko's body and the patrol car with Yamabe pass out of sight.
