Lord Honda is on his way to Edo guarded by famous for his bravery, whose wife Mine is also in the long procession and who looks forward to meeting her father Yukie, and her brother Kazuma, in the Shogunate capital.
However, Yukie is murdered and the assassin, Matagoro, takes refuge in the residence of Shirogoro Abe, leader of the wicked retainers.
On being informed by Kazuma of his father's death, Lord Ikeda orders Abe to deliver Matagoro, which he refuses.
Young Kazuma vows to avenge his father and requests the assistance of who tells him to act on his own. Mataemon is, of course, willing to help his step-brother, but conceals his real intention in order to test the young man.
Abe then decides to send Matagoro to Kyushu and he starts out guarded by some thirty warriors.
However, Kazuma with his faithful servants Buemon and Magoemon shadow him and they are in turn followed by Mataemon who is intent on seeing that justice is done.
