[ Story ]

Directed by Kozaburo Yoshimura, one of Japan's greatest directors, with a fine cast, including the fabulous Machiko Kyo, this spectacular film treats of the Japanese dance, and the life and loves of Akemi, a dancer.
In 1942, during an air-raid on a Japanese base somewhere in southern Asia, Akemi, a comfort girl sent to entertain the troops, falls in love with Lieutenant Wakabayashi.
Returning to war-scarred ToKyo in 1948, Akemi manages to become a pupil of Shino, who operates a famous school of Japanese dancing, through lnokura, Shino's patron.
Realizing her ambition to dance with a famous kabuki actor yet Shino is mercilessly criticized by the press while Akemi wins wide acclaim. Fame is now hers but she still must have financial support and with the help of lnokura she establishes a new school of dancing and becomes his mistress.
But when after twelve years she meets Wakabayashi, the old love returns, and she forsakes her wealthy benefactor and marries the former lieutenant.
Akemi goes from one success to another, but a new star arises in the person of her pupil Hisako who vows that fame and fortune shall be hers to achieve which she'll use love as her stepping stone, in the same manner as her mistress.
