[ Story ]
Based on the famous novel by Junichiro Tanizaki, this is a story of the four sisters of the ancient and reputable Makioka family of Osaka.
After their father's death, the fortunes of the family decline and their large mansion passes into other hands. The eldest daughter goes to Tokyo with her husband and undergoes various hardships in bringing up many children under straightened circumstances. The second daughter marries a public accountant and establishes a branch family of Makioka. She is very affectionate and looks after her two unmarried younger sisters. The third daughter cannot find a suitable husband, but is modest and clever by nature, and although conservative and passive in everything, is strong at heart and reliable. The youngest is active, selfish and reckless. Through the accidental death of her lover she becomes desperate and gives birth to the stillborn child of a bartender. Fortunately he is an honest man and she makes a fresh start in life with him.
