[ Story ]

Some time after Masuko, once the reigning queen of a cabaret, and Asai, an automobile salesman, set up housekeeping together, she finds out that he is already married to Ryuko, the daughter of the man to whom he was indebted while still a student.
It had been only a physical attraction at first, but the thought that Asai had been fooling her rankles deeply in Masuko's heart. She finds stolen pleasures are not enough, and begins to dream of marriage.
Asai is continually harassed by his gentle wife's single-minded love which he finds cloying since his affection for her has faded in their seven years of marriage.
Finally he gains the consent of Ryuko's brother to a divorce, on condition that he pays two million yen to his wife, and marries Masuko. Just when Asai and Masuko are heady with love again like newlyweds, Eiko, Masuko's niece, bursts in upon them.
Masuko begins to feel that a child is the only thing to make a wife's position absolutely secure and decides on an operation so that she will be able to have a baby.
When Masuko comes home after some time in hospital, the thought of how Ryuko must have felt towards her flashes across her mind. She, too, becomes exactly like Asai's former wife as she claws and clutches wildly at her niece…
