Based on a novel by Junichiro Tanizaki, this film is about a man named Joji who seems perfectly ordinary in all ways but keeps a teen-age mistress in his house. She is so whimsical, fickle, and eventually so tyrannical, that one suspects his obvious love for her is based upon some deep psychological need. When, after threatening several times, she actually leaves him, he is destitute. When she was there she made his life miserable, but he obviously cannot live without her, and does everything he can to get her to come back. When she finally returns, it is completely on her own terms, and he is more in bondage than ever. Then it becomes clear that if his is the need to be dominated, hers is clearly the need to dominate. They are made for each other, are only happy with each other, and if their love seems more than conventional, it is nonetheless a very real one.
