This is a fast moving story of a group of university students in search of easy money whose schemes lead only to disaster.
The plan of Toda, the leader of the group, was to swindle an illegal betting agency by obtaining the results of the bicycle races before the agency. But when Toda's plan bore fruit the agency was unable to settle in full and so the group took Kyoko, younger sister of Tetsutaro Matsui, the operator of the agency as a hostage until the balance was paid.
Soji, who decoyed the girl, knew in his heart that what he had done was unforgivable. But the worst happens when Kyoko is left alone with Tomita. And when Tetsutaro pays up, the wretched Kyoko returns to her home and on finding her mother dead from the shock of her abduction, commits suicide.
Soji, knows that it was not her mother's death alone which made her take her own life and breaks with his former confederates. But when Tetsutaro is arrested, after stabbing Toda to death, he swears that it was Toda alone who ruined his sister and caused the death of his mother. However, it is Soji who phones a newspaper and reveals the entire story – not forgetting to disclose his own part in "The Tragedy of Today."
