This is the story of a young college student, and his platonic love for a 16-year-old girl belonging to an itinerant dancing group, against the background of the Izu hot spring resort. Written by Kawabata Yasunari, one of Japan's leading writers, it is the tale of Kawasaki the student, and Kaoru the dancing girl who performs before audiences of drunken, lustful men to help support the dancing group. Kawasaki realizes her innocence, and falls deeply in love, and they promise to meet again when he returns to the area during his summer vacation.
