The ordinary, middle-class family comprises an aging father, mother, and five brothers and sisters.
19-year-old Michiko and her youngest brother are living with their parents, but two brothers and the elder sister are married and living separately.
Michiko, who works in a factory, visits her brothers and sister to ask them to contribute towards the livelihood of their old father who must retire. But each has an entirely different attitude to life.
When Ryoji, a college student, comes to Michiko's home as a boarder, the two become friendly enemies. But when Kokichi, who was Michiko's classmate in high school, arrives on the scene she realizes she is in love with Ryohei who has arranged a new job for her father and is now considered like a member of the family.
