[ Story ]
This film is based upon a story by Hayashi Fumiko, one of Japan's best-loved authors. A girl in her last year of high school is poor but happy. A young man takes an interest in her but she has little time for him as she is helping her parents. To help her mother she gets a job in a factory; to help her step-father she gives up a trip she has longed-for. She always makes the best of things, spreading happiness around her. When she does take interest in the young man, however, his mother considers her below their class. Saddened, for the first time she admits defeat, and decides to try her fortune in Tokyo.
