During the war a university professor meets a girl and marries her. Very soon however, it is apparent that their needs are not matched. He would much rather be translating Shakespeare than attending to her, and she has a secret in her past - one that results in her sleeping with a great number of men.
The husband knows about this and later spies upon her having such an affair. He tells her and she informs him that the reason is that she was raped by an uncle when very young. The compulsion is not about sex, however; it is about death.
This she proves by dying - as she says, so that he may begin again with a better woman.
