[ Story ]
On an outing in the country, Takahiko, an architectural student, meets a young girl on a forest path. He feels that somehow he has seen her before.
After he has made friends with her, it appears that Akiko, a simple country girl who helps her mother sell charcoal, feels the same about him.
Returning to Tokyo, he is so filled with memories of this girl that he cannot imagine life without her. Asking and receiving his father's permission, he brings her to Tokyo. There, however, he is surprised that his father should react so strongly to seeing her. Then he learns that there is the strongest resemblance between Akiko and the boy's dead mother.
His own mother and sister were presumed dead in an air-raid but his father starts to investigate. Sure enough, Akiko is his own daughter, and Takahiko's sister.
The bewildered boy does not know which way to turn because he truly loves the girl. Together the two return to the country and die side by side in the snow after an avalanche.
