Film adaptation of a nonfiction book published in 2009. Depicts the excitement of young people striving to create the best Japanese wine with inspiration from winemaker Asai Usuke, who brought the quality of Japan's wine to new levels.
Yamanashi University student Okamura (Watanabe Dai) creates the Wine Friendship Association with four others. The group has heated discussions over tastings of wine from various countries, and one day they are thrilled to encounter Kikyogahara Merlot, a Japanese wine that beats French wine in flavor. They plunge into winemaking under the tutelage of the winemaker Asai Usuke (Hashizume Isao).
