[ Story ]
Life in the Edo Period was oppressive under the shogunate. The artist Katsushika Hokusai practiced his craft during this time and is the focus of this biographical drama directed by Hashimoto Hajime of the Detective in the Bar series. The film depicts Hokusai's life in two parts: his adolescent years and his days as an elderly man.
Hokusai (Yagira Yuya) lived a life of poverty. With the rising prominence of Kitagawa Utamaro (Tamaki Hiroshi) and others, Hokusai becomes disenchanted with his own art, but through the support of ukiyo-e publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo (Abe Hiroshi), Hokusai's talents blossom. Then his sworn friend, playwright Ryutei Tanehiko (Nagayama Eita), is charged with violating the shogunate's prohibition.
