The Long Darkness and Rise, Fair Sun director Kumai Kei helmed this film adaptation of a story by Oya Soichi Nonfiction Award-winner Yamazaki Tomoko. Depicts the cruel and checkered destiny of girls known as "Karayuki-san."
Mitani Keiko (Kurihara Komaki) researches women's history and investigates the circumstances of Karayuki-san who were trafficked to destinations in Southeast Asia from the late Meiji period into the early Showa period. She meets the elderly Saki (Tanaka Kinuyo) in Amakusa and becomes convinced that she was a Karayuki-san, and after Keiko takes up residence in Saki's home she begins to unburden herself.
