[ Story ]
Master director Kumai Kei adapts Endo Shusaku's literary masterpiece for the screen. The film sheds light on the source of the anguish shouldered by Japanese people and their mentality while at the same time exploring the idealism which lurks deep within. The film stars Akiyoshi Kumiko as Mitsuko, a modern woman who has been harboring feelings of emptiness, and Okuda Eiji as Otsu, a theology student who has deeply scarred Mitsuko's heart. The cast also includes Igawa Hisashi, Kagawa Kyoko, Sugai Kin, Numata Yoichi, and Mifune Toshiro who plays a major role as a man haunted by his tragic wartime experiences and dies in agony.
