The 30th film by Kurosawa Akira also marks the 50th anniversary of his filmmaking career. The film stars Matsumura Tatsuo as Professor Uchida Hyakken, Kagawa Kyoko as his wife, and George Tokoro as one of his pupils. It was presented as a special screening at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival where it received critical acclaim.
In 1943 during the dark days of the war, Uchida Hyakken, his wife, and his students never lost their staunch open-minded, and unique spirit. Their exploits are a reminder of something important that has been forgotten today.
