This is the first documentary directed in six years by Mikami Chie of The Targeted Village and Boy Soldiers: The Secret War in Okinawa fame. The focus of this film is the current situation in Okinawa and the Nansei Islands and the lives of the islanders.
The director, who has been reporting on Okinawa and the Nansei Islands for eight years since 2015, shows the ongoing conversion of these beautiful islands into military fortresses under the leadership of both the Japanese and U.S. governments. The deployment of Self-Defense Force missile units, the massive expansion of ammunition depots, the construction of underground bases, and plans to evacuate all islanders - through these current circumstances, it asks what true "national defense" means.
