[ Story ]

Maverick genius and long-time leader of Japanese cinema, Okamoto Kihachi, presents an all-time entertainment samurai flick.
Sukeroku (Sanada Hiroyuki) is a drifter who makes a living by aiding those who are on a mission for revenge. Returning to the town of his childhood after a seven year absence, he accidentally finds himself on the scene of an actual revenge killing. However, seeing the avenger's supposed enemy, an old samurai (Nakadai Tatsuya), Sukeroku instinctively feels that his face is wrong; that it is not a face to be avenged. The old samurai unexpectedly knocks him out and Sukeroku loses consciousness. As the old samurai walks out into the street to meet the avengers, he mutters behind him, "Don't tell them the truth." Sukeroku awakens with the sound of gunfire and immediately jumps out into the street, only to find the dead body of the old samurai. During the funeral processions, Sukeroku discovers that the old samurai was actually his long-lost father, Katakura Umetaro, and that he had been tricked into the revenge ritual by a feudal official (Kishibe Ittoku) who runs the town. Seeing the real story behind the revenge scenario, he challenges his father's killer to a duel and achieves his own vengeance.
