[ Story ]
A documentary on veteran film lighting technician, Kumagai Hideo, whose illustrious career spans half a century.
After joining Daiei's Kyoto studio and working as a lighting assistant for directors including Mizoguchi Kenji, Kumagai switched to Nikkatsu and became a fully-fledged lighting technician on Akai Ranpu no Shuressha (Red Lamps on the Last Train) in 1958. After leaving Nikkatsu he worked for such prominent filmmakers as Suzuki Seijun, Yamada Yoji and Wada Makoto, and forged a particularly enduring partnership with Somai Shinji. He has worked on over 150 films and remains active in the industry, trusted implicitly by actors and filmmakers alike. From the garish brightness of films in the 50s and 60s, to the sombre hues of the 70s and through to the more natural light that permeates today's films, this documentary revisits a lifetime spent in the movie business through Kumagai's own words and those of the many men and women with whom he has worked over the years.
