[ Story ]
A live-action version of Fukumoto Nobuyuki's manga series of the same name, which has sold a total of more than 16 million copies. The title character, with no way to escape from a mountain of debt but unwilling to call it quits, takes a gamble that could turn his life around and engages in a series of novel games devised by a shady organization. The deluxe cast is led by Fujiwara Tatsuya (Death Note) as Kaiji; Kagawa Teruyuki as Tonegawa, who leads Kaiji through the series of challenges; and Amami Yuki as Endo, who lures Kaiji into this world of danger. The film is packed with vivid gambling scenes, including the "Steel Beam Crossing," filmed on a realistic set.
Ito Kaiji (Fujiwara) is a 26-year old slacker, working a part-time job. Forced into covering a friend's loans and burdened with a debt of over 2 million yen, Kaiji is duped by the female president of a loan company, Endo (Amami), into boarding the luxury ship Espoir. There the losers of the world have gathered to engage in various games: those who lose die, and those who continue to win stand to reap rich rewards. Kaiji, bringing his natural instincts and nerve to the contests, suffers a series of setbacks but manages to keep winning.
