[ Story ]
Tokyo teacher Takayuki (Osawa Takao) is gradually losing his sight. Struggling to cope, he hands in his resignation and heads for his hometown of Nagasaki, where his mother Satoko (Fuji Sumiko) awaits his return. There Takayuki spends his days walking along the picturesque streets, soaking up as much of the scenery as he can before he can no longer see at all, and is soon joined by the woman he left behind in Tokyo, his lover Yoko (Ishida Yuriko). One day the two happen upon a shrine where they meet an old man named Hayashi, who uses the word "Gege" (the end of summer) to describe the conclusion of one phase of his arduous Zen training and the beginning of another. Takayuki's sight eventually ebbs away, but just as life's many trials each have their ends and summer eventually becomes autumn, life is still far from over.
Directed by Isomura Itsumichi, this redemptive love story is adapted from the works of folk singer Sada Masashi.
