[ Story ]
Taiwan was ruled as a Japanese colony for as long as 51 years, from 1895 to 1945. Under the forced assimilation policy imposed by the government at the time, education in Taiwanese schools was carried out entirely in Japanese, producing an entire generation of Taiwanese natives who had been schooled and educated in the language. This historical documentary by former newspaper journalist Sakai Atsuko, which took her seven years of research, homes in on the lives of five Taiwanese men and women who came of age during this period, tracing their complex feelings about becoming victims of historical circumstance.
