[ Story ]

Shichibei, proprietor of a dry-goods firm, thrifty and diligent, has one weak spot in his heart…his only granddaughter, Marume, in whose hands he is like putty.
Marume wins a scholarship for three-years of study in France. This is, however, rather a shock to this thrifty old man because it will cost him four hundred thousand yen for her travel and living expenses and so he begins to devise ways and means of dissuading her from going abroad.
It is then that Shichibei comes to realize that Marume entertains more than a casual interest in her playwright friend, Akiyama.
And, wise to the ways of life, the old man visits Akiyama and makes a proposition: "If you will act as though you are head over heels in love with her and succeed in dissuading her from going to France, I will pay you three hundred thousand yen. "
At first, Akiyama is unwilling to be a party to the scheme but his interest gradually brings love.
