[ Story ]
Tomoko (Rumi Sakakibara), young and naive, comes to Tokyo from Tsugaru, in the north to find her sister Fumie (Yoshiko Mita) who ran away from home 5 years before and where their father is seriously ill.
Everything she sees in Tokyo shocks her, but the change in her sister shocks her most. Fumie, who is now the madam of a small bar, is also surprised to see her grown-up sister.
Fumie is having an affair with Takagi, a music director whose wife is in a sanatorium and she is deeply hurt when he tells her he wants to break with her as his wife is coming home.
Tomoko visits her old friends who work in Tokyo. Michio (Kensaku Morita) is at a small factory, Kazuko a dress-maker, but Kiyoshi is now at a bar and Miyoko at a nude studio. She is sad but realizes they are also struggling hard to make a living in the huge city.
One night Fumie does not come home. Tomoko blames her, but Fumie tells her how hard it has been for a woman to live alone in Tokyo and will not agree to go to Tsugaru.
Disappointed, Tomoko decides to go back alone. However, she rejoices to hear Michio has decided to return and become a farmer.
Michio goes to Kiyoshi's bar to say goodbye where he meets a girl who seduces him at a hotel and when he leaves several men attack him and take his money. Then a car knocks him down.
At the station Tomoko impatiently awaits Michio not knowing he'll never return to his home in Tsugaru.
