[ Story ]
Kyoko, works for a leading advertising agency, while Jiro is an illustrator. They meet in the street, are attracted to each other and decide to live together. They do not intend to marry; they just want to live together while they are in love.
Kamijo, Kyoko's boss, falls in love with her and proposes to her. She declines, however. She tells herself, "I prefer an incomplete simple man to a complete, unreachable man."
The woman next door dies of consumption. She married her husband after living with him for three years, but by the time they married their love had faded. Before she dies, she sadly says, "Why does love cease to be beautiful so soon? Why can't it be beautiful forever?" Her words shock Kyoko greatly.
A year passes. Kyoko knows she is pregnant. She is happy. Jiro shocks her, though, by demanding she get an abortion. Enraged, he walks out and spends the night with another girl. The girl suggests he go home and take care of Kyoko.
Jiro returns to find Kyoko's letter: "I'm sorry, Jiro. I'll get rid of the baby. I want to live with you, although I don't know how long it will last."
Jiro runs to the hospital. He wants to embrace and encourage her. He now knows how much he loves her.
