[ Story ]

At the end of the 18th century, Kae, a young girl, is much impressed by Otsugi, an older woman whom she regards as the most beautiful lady she has ever seen. When, much later, she is approached by this same lady as a possible wife for her son, she is overjoyed and accepts. At first, while the son is still away studying to be a doctor, all goes well, the two get along perfectly. But when the son returns the mother reveals herself to be extremely possessive and Kae finds that she is the rival of the woman she loves.
Wrapped up in his studies the son seems impervious to this silent duel going on around him. He is on the verge of a great experiment, the creation of a general anesthetic to be used during major operations. But, in order to discover whether or not it really works, he needs someone to try it on. Naturally, both mother and wife offer to be first. He accepts them both, giving his mother a light dose and Kae a much stronger one. The result is that his wife loses her sight and his mother, upon discovering this, dies from bitterness and shock. Kae has won but it is an empty victory.
Meantime, the husband goes on, perfects his medicine, and in 1805, the first successful operation under general anesthesia is completed.
