[ Story ]
Based on Franz Kafka's "A Country Doctor". On one snowy night, a country doctor is called to tend to a patient who has suddenly taken ill, but there is no horse and cart to transport him. An unacquainted groom appears and offers to lend his horse and cart. As the doctor climbs into the cart and leaves, the groom turns to Rosa, doctor's maid, to violate her. The horse and cart arrives at the patient's house in no time. At first glance, the patient is a healthy-looking young boy, however, when the bedclothes are pulled back, the doctor finds a gaping wound on the boy's abdomen which is infested with living worms.
Unable to do anything for the wounded boy or for Rosa who had been raped, the country doctor feels crushed by his powerlessness and overwhelmed by his responsibility. He is lonely and anxious, but nevertheless, the dawn breaks.
Directed by Yamamura Koji, whose Mt. Head (Atama Yama) won the Grand Prix at Annecy International Film Festival in 2003 and was nominated for the Best Animated Short Film at the Academy Awards in 2002. Voice actors include the Shigeyama family, led by Shigeyama Sensaku, a distinguished Kyogen actor who was designated as a Living National Treasure in 1989, and Kanehara Hitomi, an Akutagawa Award winning writer.
