[ Story ]

This is a documentary on the life and films of Kenji Mizoguchi, the great Japanese film director who died in 1956, directed by the now well-known creator of films who was once assistant director to Mizoguchi.
Beginning in the hospital where Mizoguchi died, the film follows his career from its earliest days. Places where he lived and worked are shown, accompanied by clips from several of his films.
Most of the picture is composed of interviews with those who knew him and worked with him-actors, technicians, and ordinary friends. Together their stories recreate the kind of man and the kind of director that Mizoguchi was.
The final interview, and the longest, is with the late Kinuyo Tanaka, who worked for over seventeen years with the director and who appeared in many of his films.
