The first film adaptation in sixty years of Shimazaki Toson's immortal masterpiece, which was previously made into a film by Kinoshita Keisuke in 1948 and Ichikawa Kon in 1962. Maeda Kazuo (Whisper of the Heart) directed the film, and Kato Masato and Kida Norio, both award-winning masters of their craft, co-wrote the screenplay.
Segawa Ushimatsu (Mamiya Shotaro) hides the fact that he is from an oppressed tribe and takes a job as an elementary school teacher. While his heart burns with love for Shiho (Ishii Anna), a woman from a samurai family who lives in his lodgings, Ushimatsu's origins begin to be questioned at school.
