[ Story ]
Tatsugoro discharged from work in a foundry because of his age, lives in a crowded tenement house with his wife, Tomi, daughter, Jun, and two sons, Takayuki and Tetsuharu.
He spends his retirement allowance in drink and gambling, and the family is reduced to poverty. One night a quarrel results in the boys leaving home and taking shelter with Takayuki's friend, Sankichi, whose father is a Korean.
The only friend of the family is Katsumi who tries to help Tatsugoro start a new life, but to no avail. A few days later Jun persuades her brother to return home.
But Tatsugoro continues to drink, and Jun is unable to go on a school excursion. Roaming the streets in despair, she meets a friend who takes her to a bar where she is forced by hoodlums to take a sleeping powder. But she is rescued by Katsumi.
The incident proves such a shock that she refuses to go back to school.
But a glow of happiness radiates around the Tatsugoro household when he is employed in Katsumi's factory, and Jun decides to go to high school while working in the daytime to help the family. Their happiness is shared by Katsumi who has stood by them through all adversities.
